Filipino moms have no filter

I was out for a casual dinner with *Scott and his family when out of no where his mom says, "Christal, I see you're getting bigger". Yeah, that happened, at the dinner table about 2 weeks ago. I was floored none the less. I know that I have been gaining weight and I have been going to the gym and trying to eat more healthy but damn.
Lucky for me *Scott's sister came to the rescue before I could say anything else.
She actually yelled at her mom and told her it isn't appropriate to talk like that to people and Americans especially. She then told me that everyone on her mother's side of the family likes to point out weight all the time.
At that time I was about 126 pounds and it is all in my face and thighs. I was a little sad after that. Of course I pretended it didn't hurt my feelings to be called fat but I couldn't believe it.
Since then I have been working out and lost about 5 pounds and hope to get back to the size I was when *Scott and I were first dating (110 lbs).
I came to realize that Asian standard of beauty is totally different than that of African Americans. While Asians may prefer slim bodies, AA's like thickness. Identity crisis or no?
I struggled with mental body issues for a few days after that and came to the conclusion that I will continue to work and eat healthy for ME.
I also confided in my Filipino girlfriend and she told me it is extremely common for old school Filipino moms to have no filter.
Have any of you been through something like this? How did you respond?

  1. hi im filipino and my family points out on my weight all the time. thats why i was always fit while i was in the philippines. the moment i move to america nobody reminds me anymore of how fat im getting so now im really fat. i wish i got the same environment like in philippines. look on the bright side the fat comment was not meant to be a bad thing for us filipinos. when we fat comment somebody it actually is a sign of concern and care, not an insult.
